UN Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a revolutionary movement that ousted Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties as the leader of the Islamist group HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of foreign terror groups in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the Middle East.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria until he severed ties in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the United States this year. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
