British government has placed an additional eleven more countries to its official warning roster regarding the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.

This updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to multiple notable cases including the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous chemical commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

Yet in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to identify.

Official Advice for Travelers

Authorities official the minister emphasized that each tourist should know the signs of methanol poisoning.
