The French PM Resigns Following Barely Three Weeks Amidst Broad Criticism of New Ministers
France's government instability has intensified after the new prime minister dramatically resigned within a short time of announcing a government.
Rapid Resignation Amid Government Turmoil
The prime minister was the third PM in a single year, as the country continued to stumble from one political crisis to another. He resigned hours before his first cabinet meeting on the beginning of the workweek. The president received his resignation on the beginning of Monday.
Furious Criticism Regarding Fresh Government
France's leader had faced strong opposition from opposition politicians when he revealed a recent administration that was virtually unchanged since last previous month's dismissal of his predecessor, the previous prime minister.
The proposed new government was controlled by the president's political partners, leaving the cabinet mostly identical.
Opposition Criticism
Opposition parties said France's leader had stepped back on the "significant change" with past politics that he had pledged when he came to power from the unfavored previous leader, who was removed on September 9th over a planned spending cuts.
Future Government Course
The uncertainty now is whether the national leader will decide to terminate the legislature and call another snap election.
Jordan Bardella, the leader of the opposition figure's opposition group, said: "We cannot achieve a reestablishment of order without a return to the ballot box and the parliament's termination."
He added, "It was very clearly the president who decided this administration himself. He has understood nothing of the present conditions we are in."
Election Demands
The opposition movement has advocated for another poll, thinking they can increase their seats and presence in the assembly.
The country has gone through a phase of turmoil and government instability since the president called an unclear early vote last year. The parliament remains divided between the main groups: the progressive side, the conservative wing and the central bloc, with no absolute dominance.
Financial Pressure
A financial plan for next year must be passed within weeks, even though government factions are at odds and his leadership ended in barely three weeks.
Opposition Vote
Factions from the progressive side to conservative wing were to hold discussions on the start of the week to decide whether or not to vote to dismiss Lecornu in a opposition challenge, and it looked that the administration would fail before it had even started work. Lecornu reportedly decided to step down before he could be removed.
Cabinet Appointments
Nearly all of the major ministerial positions announced on the night before remained the unchanged, including GÃĐrald Darmanin as justice minister and arts and heritage leader as arts department head.
The role of economy minister, which is crucial as a split assembly struggles to pass a financial plan, went to a Macron ally, a presidential supporter who had formerly acted as business and power head at the beginning of his current leadership period.
Surprise Selection
In a unexpected decision, Bruno Le Maire, a presidential supporter who had served as economy minister for seven years of his presidency, returned to government as military affairs head. This enraged officials across the political divide, who saw it as a signal that there would be no doubt or change of Macron's pro-business stance.
