‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Light-based treatment is certainly having a moment. Consumers can purchase illuminated devices designed to address skin conditions and wrinkles as well as aching tissues and periodontal issues, recently introduced is a toothbrush outfitted with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a significant discovery in at-home oral care.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. According to its devotees, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.

Research and Reservations

“It feels almost magical,” says a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, as well, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Sunlight-imitating lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.

Types of Light Therapy

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “generally affect surface layers.”

Risk Assessment and Professional Supervision

UVB radiation effects, including sunburn or skin darkening, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – that reduces potential hazards. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Essentially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Colored light diodes, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, enhance blood flow, oxygen absorption and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” states the dermatologist. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, with numerous products on the market, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Optimal treatment times are unknown, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, bacteria linked to pimples. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he says, however for consumer products, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

Simultaneously, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he states. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that results appear unrealistic. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he explains. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

What it did have going for it, though, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “All human cells contain mitochondria, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: free radical neutralization, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.

Current Research Status and Professional Opinions
